Graduate Psychology Class from KSU (transfer credit)
Reflective Statement:
This research paper (in Adobe PDF format), was done in 2001 for a graduate course in psychology. At that point I was pursuing a Masters in Psychology specializing in human-computer interaction. This paper discusses the user experience in registering for an online course.
Process Statement:
This research paper was very exhaustive in that it not only identifies the different procedures a student would go through in registering for a distance course, it also discusses the frustrations and possible solutions of each area in the process. Heuristic evaluations as well as a small usability study were done to gain information specific to the course registration process. A large literature review was also done so as to better understand the situation. In presenting solutions to identified problems, great care was taken so as not to create new problems which can often result when modifying the interface or a process in general.
Assessment Statement:
Over all, this research paper is successful in identifying problems and offering real solution. In fact, many of the solutions presented within this research paper were indeed used in improving the Kansas State University Division of Continuing Education course registration process. Although now several years old, many of the improvement principles identified are still valid and have withstood the test of time due to the logic of its arguments. I learned a lot in writing this research paper and still use the skills I gained in completing it. Skills learned: research skills, usability testing, heuristic evaluation skills, research review, writing skills, web accessibility, design principles and organization skills.

I like your mix of work and research here. It's often hard to align workplace needs with research / study needs, but when you have that alignment, there are benefits all around.
This research paper shows the power of that.
It takes finesse to get a life put together with the proper "affordances" to achieve work that benefits many, and I see that here.
I hope the Office was able to use your insights re: these various principles.
